Matthew Curtis

Matthew is a freelance writer and photographer based in Manchester, England. He is obsessed with beer, pubs and their culture.

Born in Lincoln, Matthew studied a BSc (Hons) in Media Production with Music Technology at the University of Teesside, graduating in 2005 with first class honours. At 22 he moved to London, where he lived for 15 years. Here his love for beer burgeoned, eventually reaching a flashpoint when he visited the USA for the first time in 2010. Following this, he established a blog, Total Ales, which, unexpectedly, led to a career as a writer and photographer who covers beer and pubs.

Matthew went freelance in 2016, and his first major role came when he was made UK editor at James Beard award-winning publication Good Beer Hunting the following year. In 2019 he and friend Jonathan Hamilton founded their own publication, Pellicle Magazine, for which Matthew also serves as editor-in-chief. He is the author of three books, including Modern British Beer (2021) and Manchester’s Best Beer Pubs and Bars (2023), both of which were published by CAMRA Books. He also produces and hosts The Pellicle Podcast, which is available to stream via all major podcast services.

The guide expertly frames the dynamic nature of beer in Manchester looking at both the history of brewing in the city dating back to the eighteenth century whilst also plotting the growth in new independent brewers like Cloudwater and Track. It also covers the rise, fall and rise again of the iconic Boddingtons beer. The guide is editorially fiercely independent and carefully researched. Whilst the author has a passion for the qualities of a good cask beer, he is equally at home singing the praises of a hazy IPA or an imported German lager. He also covers a variety of venues from modern and traditional pubs to tap rooms and bottle shops. With such a variety of beer establishments available to the reader, the choice of venue may appear bewildering. However, tips on public transport, clear and useful maps and a variety of beer trails in the city and boroughs, allow you to navigate an area with ease. Manchester is the self-titled 24 hour party people city with pubs and beer at its heart. This guide captures the optimism of the city and the variety of its drinking culture. Reviews of the first guide Curtis’s knowledge of his chosen subject/passion/delight is infectious, his enthusiasm bursts from every page of the excellent Manchester’s Best Beer Pubs and Bars – Confidentials.com Matt Curtis has produced not just a guide but a celebration of a great city and its beer – Roger Protz, beer author Matty White provides the foreward for the book.
