Real Heritage Pubs of the Southwest

They range from rural ‘time-warp’ pubs, some with no bar counters, to old coaching inns and include some unsung interiors from the inter-war and post-war period. This is the first guide of its kind for the South West and it champions the need to celebrate, understand and protect the genuine pub heritage we have left.
Pubs of the Southwest
Is there such a thing as a ‘typical’ South West pub? Given the large and varied nature of the region and the fact that its pubs have taken shape over many years, the answer, essentially, is ‘no’. By and large, pubs developed in much the same ways as in the rest of the country, though with only one large city (Bristol), the South West is short on the grand late-Victorian edifices which adorn the likes of London, Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester. On the other hand, the area is especially rich in fine rural and small town pubs, some of which are quite remarkable survivors.
Heritage pubs across the UK
Firstly, there is the national inventory of historic pub interiors. This lists those interiors which we regard as being in the 'first division' when it comes to pub preservation priorities.
Regional areas covered in great detail
The Regional Inventories of Historic Pub Interiors are the next tier in the pub preservation hierarchy. They list interiors which still have significant historic or architectural value despite the alterations to them.
Protecting Pubs
The British pub is having a tough time right now, with over twenty closing permanently every week. Since 2006, fifteen National Inventory pubs have been lost forever, along with many more which were on our Regional Inventories.

The National Inventory of historic pub interiors
The main objectives of CAMRA's Pub Heritage Group are to raise awareness and appreciation of pub interiors of historic and architectural importance / to support and, if necessary, lead on campaigns to ward off threats of closure or unwanted alterations to pubs with historic interiors as well as to seek additional protection for pubs with historic interiors through the planning system.</p> <p>The Pub heritage Group scour the country to identify other possible candidates.
